When I was small
And Christmas trees were
tall
People used to say
An apple a day keeps a
doctor away
So I grew up eating apple
everyday
To avoid seeing a doctor’s
face
And if I got sick
Albularyo did all the
tricks
I was well again
Without taking any medicine
When I was tall
And Christmas trees were
small
Many people dared to say
A doctor’s fee is hard to
pay
And when I got sick
the albularyo made his one
last trick
but it never worked
anymore
as he prepared me to meet
my dead ancestors
Then I came to see a
doctor one day
afraid not only of what s/he’d
say
But also on how much
should I pay
For the blood test,
ultrasound and x-ray
Yet all my worries had
gone away
When I could feel how much
s/he cared
s/He’s not there for
patients to gain money or prestige
s/He’s a doctor who keeps (her)
his oath to make people live
A doctor can’t save all
lives
But s/he would do
everything even if it means risking (her) his own life
I know no amount of money
can ever buy a second life
So hopefully by saying
“thank you” to my doctor may suffice.
THANK YOU!
